LO4 Evaluation of the episode

Areas for Improvement
I feel that if we were to create another episode, we would have to ensure that camera quality was to the best standard, especially when it comes to sound as we had quite a few problems in post production. I think that the strengths from creating this product have been the organisation and the following the ideas from pre production clearly in order to create a high standard production. We all worked together to create the final product and I believe it has been very successful overall.  We have put many hours into editing the episodes to ensure that they have ended up being of high quality and follow the generic conventions of a TV show. I think that the main weakness has been the sound quality and ensuring each section has the same levels.  However since using Adobe Audition, this problem has been overcome.

Production Process
We were briefed to create a 5 minuet long TV show buy Sheffield Live! So the first thing we did was assign job roles for everyone in the team. Some of the jobs were preproduction e.g storyboards, paper work and scriptwriting. Some roles were for production e.g filming, setting up equipment and recording the sound. Finally there were roles in post-production such as editing. We made it so everyone had a role in something they either enjoyed or were talented in.  We also had to make sure that people contributed equally and everyone had a role. My main responsibility in helping create Yorkshire lasses was to write the script. I wrote 3 different episodes because if the fist episode were successful we would have created more. I also directed the scenes and controlled the positions if the cameras. Another role I had was actually acting in the show.

Key Changes/ Decisions
Some of the key decisions we had to make were the location of the filming and the actors. We held auditions to find the write actors and went location scouting.  Another key decision was the camera set up, we decided to have three cameras in a triangle because from this we could get all the shots required. This set up also followed conventions of a soap opera because they use the same angles.  One of the major changes that we had to make was changing location. Originally in the script on of the scenes was in a bedroom but because we couldn’t fit all the equipment in the bedroom we had to change the location to the kitchen.  But overall it did not change the structure of the script. Another change we had to make was the lighting because we filmed the same scene on different days we had to use the soft boxes to give the illusion that it was lighter.

Quality
On one hand our footage was very high quality because we used two Sony HD cameras and one Sony 4K camera. These cameras insured that our footage was up to industry style quality. We also ensured that the angles were the same throughout filming we did this by putting tape down where the cameras should be, this helped with continuity. The editing was also at a high standard. It is professional ad follows the conventions of a soap opera. One thing that we did have issues with was the sound because it wasn’t a good quality but the sound was edited by members in the group in Adobe Audition. After the editing the sound was up to a high quality and could be used in the show.

Comparison
I feel that the show follows conventions of soap operas and looks very professional. I also feel that we fulfilled the brief. We had a few minor problems with having to re film to get the desire shots and miscommunication with filming dates. However overall I feel the show is up to a high enough standard that it could be televised.

Target Audience

It was important that the actor’s maintained a Yorkshire accent and fulfilled their profiles. This was important because for the audience watching they would expect the Yorkshire characters to have certain mannerisms and the accent. It was also important that the themes were suitable for the target audience.  So we ensured that the themes were relatable but had a sense of sensibility to it. The show would be aired after the watershed so we had to be conscious of that when writing the script and planning the target audience.

Areas for improvement
If we were to film another episode I think it would be important to film all of it on Sony 4K cameras because with the other cameras we had sound quality issues. So if we had those cameras it would ensure that the sound quality matches the video quality. Another alternative is that we could separately record the dialog in the sound booth this would also ensure the quality was good. Although we did manage to fix the sound problem by using Adobe Audition. One thing that our group was strong at was organisation from paper work to filming we managed to keep on the production schedule and everyone put a lot of hours into creating it. I feel we have ended up with a high quality TV show that follows the conventions of a soap opera.
